After a solid morning of work, I made my way to Pier 84 in Manhattan on the Hudson River for the 4Knots Music Festival sponsored by Village Voice to catch a great lineup of indie rock bands on a beautiful summer day.

The festival was a great deal for concertgoers -- only $25 for a GA ticket to see 10 bands, which were a good mix of newcomers, established indie acts, and a few bands worth more than the price of admission alone. For a slight premium more at $50 (and definitely worthwhile), VIPs had access to a boat docked alongside the pier, nicer bathrooms, bars, air conditioning, and a few included drink tickets and snacks. My friends who opted for the spendier option seemed to enjoy the digs. ("I'm on a boat!")

Unfortunately, I had a prior commitment in the evening, which sadly meant missing out on headliners Stephen Malkmus (of Pavement fame) & The Jicks and Super Furry Animals, but for the time I was there, I did manage to see 5 acts, which were all solid.
I have some exciting news! Starting this Thursday, May 28th, I will be DJing a weekly 2-hour slot for Little Water Radio, a relatively new, internet-based radio station located in the Fulton Stall Market down at South Street Seaport in lower Manhattan. I'll be playing a mix of mostly indie music songs, and probably talking about sandwiches.

Check out the rest of the roster, which looks to be a nicely eclectic assortment of programming you won't find anywhere else on the radio or internet!

If you are free Thursday afternoons between 2pm and 4pm ET, tune in here for my show, Club Sandwich!

Noah Lennox, aka Panda Bear of the band Animal Collective, performed a solo set Sunday afternoon for Boiler Room at MoMA P.S. 1 inside its geodesic VW Dome. Video artist Danny Perez supplied the stimulating visuals projected upon the dome's interior walls, which made for a trippy experience combined with Panda Bear's experimental tunes.

I was especially excited to check out this show having caught the collaboration between Perez and Animal Collective almost 5 years ago at the Guggenheim Museum. It was my first visit to MoMA P.S. 1 ever, and I've been really grooving to Panda Bear's newest album, Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper. He played a set chiefly of new tracks along with some nuggets -- pretty much the same from his sets last year at Warsaw and Irving Plaza. This also marks my first post to this blog in almost 2 years (!), and the first time I've used my shiny DSLR for a concert (thanks, Santa!). We'll see how it goes.

Shit, it was Friday night in Brooklyn, and none other than one of my all-time favorites, Morrissey, was performing that evening at the Brooklyn Academy of Music aka BAM, which is within walking distance of my apartment. I had forgotten to look for tickets when the show went on sale a few months ago, so I was disappointed by my misstep, but I also had convinced myself that Moz had already taken enough of my money over the years, so no need to dump another $100 on a performer who always managed to come up short in terms of setlist length for me. I believed that nothing could top my experience of seeing him at Webster Hall almost 4 year ago where I was up front. Anyway, umbrella in tow on a drizzly night, I decided to stroll by the venue and see if I could score a last minute miracle.

(More words and pics after the jump.)

I knew the show was sold out, making my chances slim at best, so I thought I'd improve my chances by wearing a t-shirt with Moz's mug on it (and Bestest Boy teased me for it), and I figured I'd carry a sign to make my request obvious for anyone looking for a buyer. I also resolved not to deal with any icky scalpers or to settle for anything farther than the front part of the theatre. Worst case scenario, I told myself, would be seeing a movie within the same building.

I got to the venue just after 7pm and stood in front, trying my darnedest to look like an eager, yet normal and sane fan seeking a ticket. An irritating scalper approached me repeatedly trying to convince me to take his crappy tickets far from the stage, but I didn't bite. I held my ground and continued to scan the people arriving, hoping to spot someone looking to unload an extra.

Then about 20 minutes later, I saw a guy walk towards the annoying scalper, and they seemed to be negotiating a bit, so I inched by closer. I saw the guy take out a ticket, about to hand it to the scalper (who would undoubtedly try to flip it), so I made eye contact with the gentleman. He spotted my t-shirt and sign, and left the scalper dude hanging, and came over to me, asking if I needed a ticket. I said, "Yes, what do you have?" and he handed me a decent ticket - Row K, seat 31 - 10th row, on the side. "How much do you want for it?" I inquired, and he smiled and replied, "Nothing. Enjoy."

Holy shit. Stunned. It truly was a miracle. I could hardly believe my good fortune just then. I had to blab about it to someone, so I chatted for a few minutes with a kind usher, who was also an avid concert-goer. After we traded a few stories, she tipped me off that the venue was going to allow ticket holders in Row K and up stand in the aisles if they wanted, so I realized that could be my opportunity to really get into the mix of things.

I entered the orchestra seating area and spotted my occasional concert buddy, Matt from A Heart Is A Spade, standing up front in the second row with his amazing seat, and I was delighted to run into him since the last time I saw Moz at Webster Hall, Matt was with me throughout that whole ordeal as well. I chatted with him a bit and spotted my generous benefactor behind us, so I went over to thank him again and to tip him off about what the usher had told me. Dave was supposed to go to that night's show with his good friend who had introduced him to The Smiths and Moz back in the day, but unfortunately his friend was too ill with the flu and couldn't make it out. Anyway, as soon as the lights dimmed for the opener, we bolted from our seats and made a beeline for the pit in front of the orchestra, and I found myself standing next to Matt about 3 deep from the very low stage. We were excited beyond belief.

The opener was once again Kristeen Young, who has supported Moz for quite a few tours over the years. I still don't get the appeal -- she's kind of like an amalgam of Kate Bush and Tori Amos, with a little Amanda Palmer thrown in. The majority of us didn't embrace her, but I suppose we were all restless for Moz to come on. In between one of her songs during her 30 minute set, someone from the audience yelled boo, and I believe Young teared up a little bit. I felt bad for her, but then again, her music is...really something.

Just like clockwork, Moz and his band hit the stage at 9pm sharp. Because just two hours before that I didn't even have a ticket, I hadn't anticipated the surge of emotion I would feel once the eternally handsome Morrissey stood mere feet from me. This time, unlike Webster, there was no high stage or photo pit or barricade creating distance between the man and his fans. He was truly all there, perhaps a bit more silver than black haired this time, but yes, the author and singer of songs we all knew by heart and had moped to in our youth. I could barely breathe from how overwhelming it all was.

He was in a good mood, joking in his sardonic way throughout the evening. He warned those of us up front should prepare to be whipped. Yes, he took his shirt off, during one of my favorite more recent songs, "Let Me Kiss You" and tossed it into a sea of vicious piranhas eager for a scrap of fabric. He entertained us for 90 minutes this time, and without a new album to promote, just about all the songs were familiar, especially the handful of Smiths songs he chose.

He closed out the evening with "Still Ill" as his encore, and at that point, he was freely engaging with the fans up front. I finally managed to shake his hand and nearly wept, but I am a nostalgic fool.

What a magical evening!

(Sorry for the delay in getting this out -- the holidays and all that jazz.)

I had been feeling a slight malaise about the upcoming Christmas holiday. I had yet to pick up gifts for anyone on my list (and boy, do I hate shopping), and visiting with family generally stresses me out. Bestest Boy was working late on his movie, so I had to psych myself up for seeing Sufjan Stevens' "Seasonal Affective Disorder Yuletide Disaster Pageant On Ice" by lonesome. Anyway, I think I wore him off Sufjan with all the holiday music play in the car, so perhaps it's best he didn't accompany me.

I got to the venue just before doors and managed to secure a spot front and center about two deep from the stage, which was COVERED with the tackiest and most colorful decorations. There was a big spinning wheel on the side of the floor with about dozen holiday songs. The floor filled rather quickly, and excitement was in the air.

To warm up the crowd, Rosie Thomas' alter-ego, Sheila Saputo, came out with her comedic routine, much like the last time I saw her at Southpaw over five years ago. She made us quite giggly, but eager for Sufjan & Co. to hit the stage.

The full band (including Rosie, who underwent a costume change) finally came out just before 10pm and played for about 2-1/2 hours. The set consisted of a great blend of holiday hits that we all knew and were encouraged to sing along to, as well as some original Christmas songs. Even while singing the most delicious and solemn harmonies, the band seemed very goofy and loose, and full of Christmas cheer. Lots of confetti, balloons, and inflatable Santas and fell upon us as we all serenaded each other like a bunch of grinning idiots.

Andrew Bird is one hell of a talented dude. I saw him perform earlier this year at a tiny venue for which he stuck mostly to new material, which left me craving more. Sapient assured me seeing him this time around for his solo Gezelligheid show would be wonderful, and indeed it was. I got in line an hour before doors and managed to sit in the second row, center aisle, making the cavernous Riverside Church seem looming and intimate at the same time.

(More pics, including a setlist, after the jump.)

For me, the inexperienced Andrew Bird fan, the show was as close to wonderful as it could get, quite possibly my favorite show of the year. Though varying a bit from the setlist (which I posted below, so don't scroll all the way down if you don't want to spoil your future Gezelligheid experience, though I'm pretty sure he mixes it up), Bird did the first set mostly solo, bringing out bassist Alan Hampton to join him for the end of the first hour and the rest of the show. Bird had a slight cough in between songs, but sounded good. I thought there would be a bit more storytelling, but he only spoke a few halting sentences in between songs.

No matter, we were there for the music, and boy, did he deliver. He played a great combination of familiar tunes from his catalog, interesting covers (I liked the Townes Van Zandt one of "If I Needed You"), ones with temporary titles (including a complex one called "Polaski [sic] Dreams"), and even a few songs with no lyrics that were works in progress. For the middle part of his show, he had the lovely Tift Merrit join him and Hampton for some great harmonies. Unfortunately, the show started a bit later than anticipated, so it looks like some good ending encores were omitted from the intended setlist, but I did not walk away disappointed by the 2-1/4 hours of delicious music.

As an aside, thanks to the wonders of the internets, I realized that one of my TTFM friends, DJ Jasmine, was also in attendance, so we arranged to meet each other during intermission for the first time in person (finally). Kind of silly, but also goes to show what a fun, shared experience music can be with my fellow music geeks.

I would be remiss if I made no mention of the setting. Riverside Church, as you can see from the pics below, served as an ornate, impressive backdrop making it a major player in the evening's performance. The acoustics were nearly perfect, save for a slight buzzing that emanated from one of the Victrola style speakers (32 in all) at times, especially since Bird's music was performed without percussion or heavy, distorted bass lines. It was also fascinating watching the whirring center speakers as they spun and warped the sound. Did it feel like a church service? The agnostic in me says no, but I definitely felt a sense of solemnity and magic as I peered upwards into the darkness near the ceiling.

We got a nice opener, Savoir Adore, who played a quick set of energetic, punchy songs, including some tunes I've played on turntable.fm ("Bodies," "Dreamers"). I thought their style complemented Stars well, and I hope to catch them again during the upcoming CMJ Festival.

The room got very packed, as some people who were at the earlier Webster Hall show filled out the spaces. At this point, we were up front center against the stage, which made us killer excited for the band to start. Torquil Campbell came on stage briefly to mic check and announced, "We're gonna a lot of shit we haven't played in fucking ages." If you look down at the bottom of my pics, you'll see the proposed setlist, but they ended up going off course anyway.

When the full band got on stage, I was nearly trembling. Torq was right in front of me, often placing his foot on the monitor on the wobbly table that I was leaning against. Is it possible to be too close? I wondered, as he locked eyes with me from 3 feet away throughout the set. I felt sheepish snapping pics, and really, I was too close, so forgive the blurriness, but you'll get a sense of the intimacy of this gig. Of course the crowd went nuts when they played older stuff from Set Yourself On Fire, all of us engaged in a sing-along.

They played for about 70 glorious minutes. Unfortunately, even though it felt like they could have gone a bit longer, Amy disappeared off the stage near the end and never returned. Perhaps the fatigue of playing two gigs in an evening caught up with her finally at nearly 2am. Hopefully she and the band enjoyed it nearly as much as we did.
I had made up my mind a long time ago that I probably would never bother seeing Bon Iver again after the first time I caught him four years ago at the Bowery Ballroom. Not because I dislike the band -- far from it. That concert was so intimate, so perfect, that I knew catching Justin Vernon again in a larger venue would never recapture the magic we felt that night. But when I randomly checked Ticketmaster a week before his four show run at one of the city's largest venues, Radio City Music Hall, I managed to pull up a front row pit ticket that was impossible to refuse. So I bought myself an early birthday present and prepared myself to see him on night 3.

(More words, pics and a setlist after the jump.)

My expectations going into the show were tempered. I have to admit that having spent the past year on turntable.fm and learning to consider Bon Iver as one of the "safe" choices for DJing on the site has somewhat affected my eagerness for the band. Also, I doubted whether anything would top that first time I saw Bon Iver, when I practically knew nothing about them.

Yet, here we were at a venue that dwarfs Bowery Ballroom by a factor of 11. In fact, the last time I was at Radio City Music Hall was for a lecture by the Dalai Lama, and while his energy radiated well beyond this impressive venue, I wasn't certain Bon Iver could do the same. I waltzed down to the very front of the auditorium and worried whether the sound would be distorted, being so close, but to my delight, the sound levels for both the opener and Bon Iver were fine.

The opener was someone Vernon later described as a "hero" of his -- a Canadian singer-songwriter named Doug Paisley. He came onto the stage by himself only with an acoustic guitar, playing a rather straight forward set. I felt his songs were pleasant but he would have been better appreciated in a venue like the Living Room. His deep but gentle voice reminded me of a Townes Van Zandt type. I enjoyed his humble demeanor but wondered whether he was an appropriate choice to warm up the crowd with his steady, quiet set.

No matter, Bon Iver came on just after 9:15pm, as promised since they were streaming the performance online. The band was now over twice as large as when I had seen them at Bowery, including two sets of drums, and a brass section. They opened with the thundering "Perth" and I knew this was going to be a hell of a show. The reason for going to a large venue like Radio City is for the impressive light show that often enhances the music, and that it did, setting the mood.

I was content to discover that despite the augmentation in size, Bon Iver has not lost the raw emotional power that was so quintessential to their songs. Vernon's falsetto still ripped me apart (though he was kind of a goofball while talking in between songs). I was especially moved by his solo performance of "Woods" from his Blood Bank EP, while shrouded in darkness. I originally had dismissed it as an unnecessarily autotuned composition, but seeing him perform it live by looping his own voice over a dozen times and layering them in a blistering harmony totally floored me, much like that impossibly beautiful cover of "Lovin's For Fools" I saw Bon Iver do with the Bowerbirds years ago.

The show ended quite a bit short of the 11pm curfew, coming in at about 85 minutes, leaving me wanting more, but as far as what had transpired, I loved it all, especially in comparison to 2008. Bon Iver has truly evolved in great ways.

Jurvanen, supported by two female backup singers and a drummer (who also covered the vibraphones), played songs off of his two albums, PInk Strat and Barchords, at one point to tease an audience member calling out an early request, saying that chances were good the request would be honored since he didn't have many releases. Jurvanen proved quite humorous in between his songs, at one point apologizing for the future music that may result from the union of his fellow Canadians, Chad Kroeger (of Nickelback) and Avril Lavigne.

True to his promise, Bahamas wandered through most of their tunes, which sounded great live. Despite my distaste for the sound the first time I visited this venue, The Bell House seems better suited for acts with a clear, warm sound, like the time I went a few months ago for Andrew Bird. I loved hearing "Lost In The Light," "I Got You Babe," the pretty humorous "Hockey Teeth" (which he explained originally was meant to describe the most incredible kiss with a girl), and the crowd-rousing "Caught Me Thinkin'."

After the show, I decided to support this fine indie musician by buying his latest on vinyl. To my delight, Jurvanen was there at the merch table himself, chatting with fans. I managed to have him sign my copy. =)

A week ago, I remembered that Bob Mould was playing a free show at Williamburg Park that evening, and despite having to work the next morning at 5am, I made sure I was there because he was playing all of Sugar's Copper Blue, an album that was released twenty (!) years ago. To give you some context, that album came out just as I was starting freshman year of college, and was probably one of the first 50 cds I had ever purchased. Yeah, I'm that old.

I got in line around 5pm, a half an hour before doors, and to my slight consternation, I was the only female in line so far -- a total sausage fest much like when I caught Kraftwerk at MoMA (link to follow). The line was full of guys, many of whom were older than me, probably fans stemming back to Bob's Hüsker Dü days. It was exciting that we were catching someone so legendary in the alt rock realm.

Due to reasons unknown, the venue did not come close to being filled close to capacity, which I found surprising, especially for a free show on a Friday night. I found myself very easily up front, which afforded me good opps for taking photos, but unfortunately, resulted in poor acoustics for the opener, which surprised me, because I had a really good time being up front for My Morning Jacket a few weeks ago at the same venue.

I was looking forward to Cymbals Eat Guitars, having heard a few of their tunes on turntable.fm. They seemed to be an earnest, young band, eager to rock. Sadly, the monitor for Joseph D'Agostino's guitar dominated any of the vocals he sang, so I had trouble distinguishing the songs. Also, they didn't play the one song of theirs I know really well -- "Wind Phoenix (Proper Name)" -- so that was a bit of a bummer.

No worries, Bob Mould and his crew came on stage and charged through a very muscled first 45 minutes or so, playing Copper Blue in order. I had a great time recalling this album that I played on repeat during college, back when we actually used to listen to albums. Mould sounded the same and put forth great energy despite a sparse lineup of just him on guitar, with a bassist and drummer. I was so happy singing along to "If I Can't Change Your Mind."

After the main set, they played another set, this time comprised of songs through Mould's career, including quite a few Hüsker Dü songs and ones off his latest effort, Silver Age. Sadly, I decided to leave early so I wouldn't be completely useless at work the next morning, and ended up missing a song with Craig Finn of The Hold Steady. Oh well, still a great evening, nonetheless!

I finally bit the bullet and bought tix to see Beirut. Okay, well, I bought them back in January for a show that wasn't happening until the end of the summer, which seemed a bit ridiculous to me at the time, especially because I tend to dislike outdoor shows. One might assume that such advance planning indicates a strong affinity for the band. Truth be told, I had dodged seeing this band for ages because I found their music a bit too twee for my tastes, but had gotten into their tunes a bit more last summer because of turntable.fm, so I figured I'd give them a roll.

I ended up taking my dear friend Hannah for her birthday since she is a fan of Beirut. Contrary to my worst fears, the day was glorious in terms of weather. I got in line earlyish for a spot up front, and found myself amongst uberfans, several of whom had ukuleles, and were strumming and singing their renditions of "Postcards From Italy." You know the type -- they probably did theatre in high school and are rabid followers of Glee, too. Like, omg. Anyway, we managed to snag some spots on the rail, front center, which made withstanding the singalongs worth it, and even met up with maddeningcrowd from TTFM.

Beirut sounded great. They were a really solid group of musicians with a nice mix of horns led by the young but seasoned Zach Condon, who alternated between trumpet and ukulele while handling vocals, which had a nice laid back crooner's quality. The music itself was uplifting at times, exhibiting a good mix of Balkan, funeral and circus influences. I knew a good number of songs from the not too lengthy set, which went on for about 75 minutes, which was just fine by me because their songs kinda sound the all the same to me after a while. Lovely, but not particularly distinguishable for me, yet a good soundtrack to the cool, dwindling end of summer.

I'm glad I caught Beirut, though I doubt I'll ever feel fussed to see them again. Mostly, I was happy that I got to hang with my girlie Hannah.

Bestest Boy and I wandered over to near the Brooklyn Navy Yard to Commodore Barry Park, the site of this year's totally free Afro Punk Fest, a two day affair that featured an amazing music line-up on two stages, as well as some amazing skateboarders and bikers, and met up with orange bear @eightrack. We didn't have too much time there, unfortunately, but managed to catch the wonderfully entertaining Reggie Watts, who dazzled the crowd with his beat-boxing and improvisational stylings despite some technical malfunctions. I wished we had more than the 40 minutes allotted to his set, but you take what you can get when it's free. Before Reggie, we also caught a local band called Body Language, who, upon hearing them, I immediately thought they'd be good to spin in the turntable.fm room I help run called Indie While You Work. And, yeah, I got home and spun some, and the song "Falling Out" went over very well.

(More pics and words after the jump. Click to enlarge.)

We closed out our afternoon there with watching some of the skateboarders and bikers going up and down the ramps and rails. I could have easily stayed at the festival for many more hours, but our stomachs were growling, so Bestest Boy and I headed out for some Korean style tacos from Korilla truck and a delicious ginger mango slushie from Kelvin. Yum.
First time seeing My Morning Jacket live. Face melted.

Rolled into the fan club line early courtesy of Wawa and managed to get up front on the rail very easily. All the people around me assured me that it'd be a great time tonight in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, for my first experience, and boy, they weren't kidding. I also had the company of emmyjane and Angela from turntable.fm, so we awaited the entrance of Jim James and Co. like a bunch of kids on Xmas morning.

(More pics and words after the jump. Click to enlarge.)

Granted, I am a casual fan of MMJ, so I didn't know every tune they played, but their music is so sweeping, it reaches way into you regardless of your familiarity. Jim James' voice is so joyful and stirring. While my focus remained on him for most of the show, we stood in front of guitarist Carl Broemel, who was a BEAST.

I love seeing a show with a good crowd of fans (especially one like my buddy Wawa, who spazzed out many times), and this bunch did not disappoint for the most part. Even when a drunken bimbo slammed her way up front and tried to steal a spot on the rail (we did manage to get security to escort her out) and ruined the vibe for about ten minutes, I was able to regain my focus on this magnificent spectacle of a band and walk away completely blown away.

Set-wise, they hit a good mix of songs across their albums, including emmyjane's "Lay Low" and Wawa's requested "I Can Never Take the Place of Your Man" (Prince Cover). Dean Wareham of Luna, Galaxie 500, etc. fame also joined the band during the encore for a cover of George Harrison's "Isn't It a Pity." It had been ages since I'd seen him so it wasn't immediately obvious to us who he was. D'oh.

Wawa asked me before the show began whether I'd be interested in catching MMJ in December in Portchester, NY, and I told him it'd on how much I enjoyed tonight's performance. The concert tonight was really excellent. Now I don't know if I want to tarnish my memory of it with an experience that would be hard pressed to top this one.
I love summers in NYC because of the crazy amount of free shows out there, but man, it was a hot afternoon, baking in the sun. Bestest Boy, Jamie and I tolerated the opener, Just A Band, and barely got through Theophilus London, who was very entertaining, but I thought was a bit all over the place. The payoff came in the form of the headliners, Amadou & Mariam, who were every bit as charming and wonderful as I expected them to be. Such happy music!
Tonight caught the mesmerizing Merrill Garbus, who is better known as her main project tUnE-yArDs. I had slept on seeing her in proper form, so when I realized she'd be performing (for FREE) as part of an ensemble in conjunction with The River To River Festival Ecstatic Summer program, I made damn well sure I put that in my calendar and hustled over for some seats in the front row of the World Financial Center, which was a nice outdoor venue by the water.

(More pics and words after the jump.)

Merrill first hit the stage alone, with her drums and ukuele, playing her signature combination of percussion and yelps. She had such a joyous, focused air about her. Then, the a capella ensemble Roomful of Teeth joined her, enhancing her unique sound. For the remainder of the program, RoT performed pieces composed by Merrill as well as another composer,William Brittelle. Such a interesting sound compared to your usual a capella arrangements, which I sometimes find a little too clever for my tastes.

The opener, The Yehudim, sounded nice too, but the content perhaps a bit too esoteric for me. They helped back RoT as well.

All in all, a nice evening, seeing all the musicians collaborate with each other incorporating different styles seamlessly. I hope to catch Merrill Garbus in her proper form of tUnE-yArDs soon, but this will suffice for the time being.
After winning some free tix from My Free Concert, Bestest Boy and I headed to Williamsburg to check out a groovy foursome of bands playing together as part of the Northside Festival. We got there in time to catch some of Beach Fossils, who seemed green but had good energy. Then came The Thermals, who played a typically solid and tight set. Third was the Swedish troubadour, Jens Lekman, whose band had visa problems, so he did a mostly solo acoustic set comprised of older songs. He was charming and a good storyteller, though I find his music a bit lackadaisical at times for my taste. Headlining the whole shebang was Of Montreal, who I found a hot, crazy, fun mess. Thank god for free tickets.
Bestest Boy and I went to Prospect Park to catch our first Celebrate Brooklyn! concert of the summer. Tonight featured the lovely Laura Marling and soulful Michael Kiwanuka, both from the UK. I have enjoyed their tunes on turntable.fm so I thought a free concert on a crisp night would be a perfect way to check them out. Both played gorgeous sets, but I was not completely entranced, as their low key performances seemed better fit for a smaller venue, and I wasn't up front as usual. I will say, however, that their music is perfect to listen to on a rainy Sunday afternoon while trapped indoors.
Met up with emmyjane and vin for this show. We all had gotten hooked on Graffiti6's excellent album, Colours, and played many a track on TTFM over the last few months. I even bought it on special edition vinyl on Record Store Day! I looked forward to hearing these guys live and wondered whether they'd be able to reproduce the gorgeous sounds of dance and soul that resonated throughout.

(More words and the setlist after the jump.)

I have mixed feelings about this show. Technically, the band sounded great. Jamie Scott has an interesting voice that is left relatively untouched in recordings and his bandmate, Tommy D. is a beast on guitar. And all the songs sounded great, including a great cover of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody." However, as you can see in the picture above, Jamie relied heavily on an iPad attached to his mic, which really weakened his stage presence. I wondered if he had cues for what stories to tell. I kinda wanted to tell him, "Lookit, you're cute in a Nick Lachey kind of way, and have an amazing voice, especially when you cut loose and go higher. Just stick with that, okay?"
I knew I would love the show even before I saw it.

For this show, I made sure to get to the venue on the early side (around 2:30pm) to beat the majority of people coming from the City. Sure, getting to Newark was more of a pain than going to MSG, but all in all, it wasn't bad. I managed to get home in about an hour after the show let out. The sound was superior. I think I shall have to consider future shows at the Prudential Center.

(More pics and words after the jump.)

Back to the music. Radiohead was fantastic. They had a really cool backdrop of LED lights as well as a dozen or so panels suspended above the stage that would move and rotate and have projections of various band members. I was pretty much dead center a few people from the stage, so a good view of Thom Yorke and his erratic dancing.

Musically speaking, The King of Limbs, while a tight album, hasn't appealed to my emotions the way prior Radiohead albums have, so I enjoyed the performances, but the songs did not move me in the way I was moved for prior Radiohead gigs, even though I was so close. But whatever, a Radiohead show is still pretty friggin' awesome overall.

Met up with emmyjane and Lise for a cheap early show at the Mercury Lounge which worked great with my early-to-bed schedule. We fell in love with the song "Whale" by Yellow Ostrich on turntable.fm, and sure enough, lead guitarist/vocalist Alex Schaaf kicked off the set with the lovely tune. Being up front by the stage afforded us a good view of Schaaf as he worked his collection of looping and effects pedals, effortlessly creating harmonies with himself and layering rhythms. He was backed by a drummer and a multi-instrumentalist who filled in the gaps, but the real star was Schaaf.

(More words, and a pic after the jump.)

I wondered if his sound would be different if he had a full band. Maybe looping pedals are a substitute for other musicians for a band on a budget. I have a feeling we caught this band at the right moment in time, in a small venue where such things are viewed as charming and DIY. I can't imagine how Yellow Ostrich would fare in a large venue. Will they have to alter their approach?

Anyway, I had a nice time that evening with a few ladies from turntable.fm. And, being on my newfound vinyl kick, I purchased the band's current album and had Schaaf autograph it for me. Wheeeee!

(Sorry for the late post! 9/9/12)

I won a pair of tix via Twitter to see Ben Kweller at Irving Plaza from My Free Concert, where I've found out about some fun free shows and won some tickets. It had been almost three years to the date that I was last at this venue, when I saw PJ Harvey & John Parish.

I know some folks are huge Kweller fans. He's got a loose, goofy charm and seems like a big, friendly kid who's eager to please. His tunes are sunny and energetic, and I can see why he got together with Ben Folds and Ben Lee for their side project, The Bens. I was only vaguely familiar with his stuff prior to the show -- his music, while well-constructed, doesn't particularly stick with me, but I enjoyed his performance, especially having paid nothing for my admission.Qbertplayahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03159694286612038842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5233536919208482752.post-76303425916269148932012-02-26T23:19:00.000-05:002012-12-24T10:11:06.518-05:00Andrew Bird @The Bell House, Feb. 25th

I have to admit, for the longest time I never paid Andrew Bird much mind. I had seen him guest here and there with a few bands (including a notable time with Wilco), but thought his whistling thing a bit shtick-y and his singing voice unremarkable for my tastes. But, cut to present day, and my infatuation with turntable.fm, and lots of listens later, I now have a newfound appreciation for Bird and his craftsmanship. He is championed by some of my most trusted ttfm peers, so when mervdiddy and Sapient urged me to jump on tickets for a secret show happening that weekend under the pseudonym "Useless Creatures," I grabbed myself a ticket and convinced emmyjane to come along.

(More pics, including setlist, after the jump.)

We got to the minuscule Bell House early enough to grab a spot near the stage. There was no opener.

When Bird got on stage, he came out alone and started off doing some looping bits as he is wont to do. He was then joined by a backing band and they pretty much played his upcoming album, Break It Yourself, in its entirety, but out of order. He then followed with a good number of encore tracks, including "Tables and Chairs" (there will be snacks!) and twangy covers including a few by the Handsome Family.

I had regretted having never seen Bird in a smaller venue, and he is due to return to NYC for a few nights at the much larger Beacon Theatre. Thankfully, this was a great opportunity to catch him in an intimate, informal setting, where he proved to be loose and engaging. Seeing him live made all the difference, as only then can you witness the amazing job he does layering himself and his notes. I no longer see his voice as plain and unremarkable, but rather, another element that he weaves seamlessly into his tapestry of violin, guitar, whistling and all.
